It is an advantage of guided bus trips to get a lot of interesting additional information. With the big tour operators you have to put up with rather long pick-ups, because they are operating all over the island - of course this time is lacking in planned visiting.

There is also a wide range of local agents, which mainly offer the same choice of excursions as the “big ones”, many times at half price, their quality being in no way inferior to those of the other agencies.

Only state-recognized tourist’s guides, registered in their corporation, have the right to guide archaeological sites and there are lots of them, working freelance for different agencies “Big & Small“. Therefore the price of the excursion is not absolutely an indication of quality.
 

In general the whole excursion programme can be done by car by oneself. The only excursion we absolutely recommend to do organised, is the “Gorge of Samaria”, the complete hiking tour of 18 km. Get detailed information about appropriate clothes (shoes) etc and rules of behaviour. You surely will find your salesman, not only trying to talk you into buying, but giving you extensive information.

Who is suffering from travel sickness should be able to help himself or even renounce to go on excursions, because almost no agency is able to guarantee reservation of front seats in the coach. Normally all agencies provide fully air-conditioned coaches and have practiced, experienced drivers who know their island.
